| Rail | See - Well. |
| RAM | Random Access Memory (RAM) - A data storage device for which the order of access to different locations does not affect the speed of access. RAM is usually volatile, meaning that it does not retain its contents when the power is switched off. |
| Random Access Memory (RAM) | A data storage device for which the order of access to different locations does not affect the speed of access. RAM is usually volatile, meaning that it does not retain its contents when the power is switched off. |
| RAS | Remote Access Service (RAS) - Allows support personnel at a remote location to perform system maintenance. |
| RDBMS | Relational Database Management System. Also See – Relational Database |
| Read Only Memory (ROM) | A type of data storage device that is manufactured with fixed contents. In its most general sense, the term might be used for any storage system whose contents cannot be altered. ROM is inherently non-volatile storage - it retains its contents even when the power is switched off, in contrast to RAM. |
| Real Time | "Live", or "as it happens", not a practice run. If you are listening to a "real time" newscast, it means that you are hearing of the event as it happens, and not after the fact. |
| Receipt | A receipt is a record of payment. It can be an itemized list of all menu items posted to a guest’s check and the form of payment accepted, or it could simply show the date and the amount accepted by the establishment. |
| Receipt Printer | A receipt printer generates a customer receipt instead of a guest check. While a guest check printer can be a slip or roll printer, a receipt printer is usually a roll printer. |
| Redundancy | As related to the POS system, this means that a server can post items to a guest check at one terminal, log off, go to another terminal, open that same check, and the new items will show up at that terminal as well. |
| Reference Entry | A string of numbers or characters that an employee may be required to enter with a transaction item.Example: If a restaurant places ads with coupons and they want to track which ads are bringing in the most new guests, they will program their [Coupon] key to require the operator to enter the coupon’s name. |
| Reference Number | The number assigned to each transaction in a billing statement. It is frequently used to aid in the resolution of cardholder challenges. |
| Referential Integrity | A collection of properties which should be possessed by data in a relational database.
Example: In a database of family members, if we enter Diana as a spouse of Charles, we should also enter Charles as a spouse of Diana. Similarly, if we remove one end of the relationship we should also remove the other |
| Relational Database | A relational database allows the definition of data structures, storage and retrieval operations, and integrity constraints. In such a database, the data and relations between them are organized in tables. A table is a collection of records and each record in a table contains the same fields. Certain fields may be designated as keys, which means that searches for specific values of that field will use indexing to speed them up. Records in different tables may be linked if they have the same value in one particular field in each table. |
| Remote Access Service (RAS) | Allows support personnel at a remote location to perform system maintenance. |
| Remote Order Output | A remote order prints in a kitchen or other prep area. This option is used when you do not want the employee who posted the order to hand deliver it to the cook or prep person. |
| Remote Printers | Printers that are usually located in prep areas, such as the hot prep area, cold prep area, or bar. |
| Remote Procedure Call (RPC) | A protocol which allows a program running on one host to cause code to be executed on another host without the programmer needing to explicitly code for this. RPC is an easy and popular paradigm for implementing the client-server model of distributed computing. An RPC is implemented by sending request message to a remote system (the server) to execute a designated procedure, using arguments supplied, and a result message returned to the caller (the client). |
| Repeat Round | Allows an operator to re-order all the menu items from the previous service round with one key, rather than having to re-enter each item. |
| Report Class | See - Classes. |
| Requisitioning | A method of ordering food from the kitchen usually accomplished using remote printers, dupes, or chits. |
| Response Time | The length of time required to complete an electronic transaction. |
| Retail | Retail refers to a type of sale that is a non-consumable, physical object, such as a hat, or a pen, etc. Restaurants are not retail outlets because food is consumable, and hotels are not retail outlets because that act of renting a room is what’s for sale, not the physical room itself. Restaurants and hotel may have gift shops in them, however, that would sell retail items |
| Return Item | A menu item that is prepared and then rejected by the customer, or not delivered to the customer. Because the item was actually prepared, it is still accounted for in the inventory depletion and inventory cost reports. |
| Revenue | Revenue is the amount of money brought in by an establishment from its customers. Revenue is not the same as profit, as profit is the total amount after all expenses have been paid left to the establishment. |
| Revenue Center | An accounting entity defined within a system to provide sales tracking, accounting, and transaction control. Usually, a revenue center matches an outlet in the restaurant, such as a bar, dining room, or a retail shop, or the revenue center could be the entire restaurant. Also see – Profit Center. |
| Rocks | This is a drink served over ice. |
| Roll Printer | A type of printer that is loaded with a roll of paper that turns inside the printer as information is printed to it. Opposite of “Slip Printer”. |
| ROM | See - Read Only Memory. |
| Room Charge | A form of tendering where a guest check is settled by adding the check’s total to the guest’s room folio. |
| Round | This refers to the division of an order. Each time the check is service totaled, a new round will begin with the next posted item. |
| Round Balance Due | Forces the balance of a transaction to be rounded up or down to the nearest 5 or 10. Used when the smallest unit of base currency is 5 or 10, not 1. |
| RPC | See – Remote Procedure Call. |
| Run A Tab | See - Tab |
| Runner | The person that delivers the food from the kitchen to the guest. |
