Gift CertificateA monetary substitute, equal in value to the amount paid for it, that can be given to another to be used in place of cash when purchasing goods and/or services from the issuing establishment. Usually not subject to tax when purchased.Example: A $30.00 gift certificate purchased by Mary and given to Tom will have cost Mary $30.00, and can be redeemed by Tom for up to $30.00. Generally, because it has already been paid for, the bearer is entitled to change back if full amount is not used.
Global Accessws a change or update in the POS system to affect all terminal locations simultaneously.A security level setting that allows a user to have access to all levels of the POS system and perform all available functions.
Grace PeriodDetermines how much time, in minutes, each employee will have before or after their scheduled time to clock in or out without being considered early or late.
Graphical User Interface (GUI)The use of pictures rather than just words to represent the input and output of a program. A program with a GUI runs under some windowing system. The program displays certain icons, buttons, dialogue boxes etc. in its windows on the screen and the user controls it mainly by moving a pointer on the screen and selecting certain objects by pressing buttons on the mouse while the pointer is pointing at them.
GratuityA voluntary payment for services rendered above the amount due on the guest check. Usually, the accepted proper gratuity is a monetary amount equal to 15% of the total amount due of the guest check.
Gross SalesThe total revenue generated before subtracting out any voids, returns, comps, or discounts. Opposite of “Net Sales.”
GuestA purchaser of an establishment’s goods or services.
Guest CheckThe itemization of all items ordered by each guest presented to the guest when payment is due. May also be kept by the guest to double as a receipt
Guest Check IDA 16-character descriptor that an employee can add to a guest's check for the purpose of uniquely identifying it.
Guest Check Information DetailUp to 30 lines with 32 characters each of reference information that can be added to a guest check. This detail can be programmed to print on the guest check, the customer receipt, or at specific order devices.
Guest CountGuest count is the number of customers served (... at a table, on a guest check, by an employee, during a shift, for a given day, week, etc.) This is a fundamental statistic used to diagnose the health of the business. Beyond the basic "how many customers did we serve on Saturday night", a POS can measure what time customers come in, how long they stay (a.k.a. turnover), and most importantly, the average purchase amount.Guest count is also called 'covers' or 'cover count'. Before POS, a quick way to get a guest count was to count the number of plate covers being washed.
