| Data | Information that is in a machine-readable form. Data can be input information, output information, or stored information. |
| Data Definition Language (DDL) | A language enabling the structure and instances of a database to be defined in a human- and machine-readable form. |
| Data Manipulation Language(DML) | A language enabling the user to retrieve information from a database.Example: SQL, FoxPro. |
| Data Mining | Analysis of data in a database using tools which look for trends, or anomalies, without knowledge of the meaning of the data. |
| Database | A collection of information usually organized into files, important to the function of the system. These files can be stored, retrieved, and updated using a collection of programs called a database management system. |
| Database Management System(DBMS) | A set of programs that allow other programs to access the database’s files.Example: Rather than requiring all data entry professionals to know and understand programming languages, a company would choose to use a particular database management system that will allow it’s employees to input data in an easily understood format, and then will “translate” that data into a format useable by the database files. |
| Days on Hand | Refers to how much stock a manager should keep on his shelves at any given time. He should have “X” number of days worth of goods. |
| DBMS | Database Management System (DBMS) - ograms to access the database’s files.Example: Rather than requiring all data entry professionals to know and understand programming languages, a company would choose to use a particular database management system that will allow it’s employees to input data in an easily understood format, and then will “translate” that data into a format useable by the database files. |
| DDE | Dynamic Data Exchange. (DDE) - A system that allows two applications programs to be linked together so that a change made in one application is immediately reflected in the other. |

| Debit Card | Like a credit card except that rather than acquiring a separate credit account that draws interest, the debit card takes funds directly from the cardholder’s bank account. Works like a check; looks like a credit card. |
| Declining Budget | A way of tracking how much of your beginning allowance has been spent, and how much you have left. You begin with the full amount you have been budgeted and subtract each expenditure, keeping a perpetual balance.Example: Works just like a running balance of a checking account. |
| DEMO | Describes a product that has been released to selected parties for testing or demonstration purposes, but not for sale.Example: A band trying to get hired to play at a particular establishment may send the owner of that establishment an example of their abilities in the form of two or three songs recorded onto a cassette. This cassette is called a Demo tape. |
| Device | A piece of hardware not originally part of a computer system or network, but that is interfaced with that system or network to allow communication between the two.Example: A printer. |
| Dial-Up Networking | A temporary connection between machines established over an analog telephone line using modems. |
| Dial-Up Terminal | An authorization device, like a telephone, that dials an authorization center for transaction approval/validation.A computer that has been configured for dial-up networking. |
| DIP Switch | Toggle switches that enable the user to configure a circuit board. DIP switches have only two possible positions, on or off (0 or 1).Example: DIP switches work very much like a light switch in that you may toggle the switch only to turn a function on or off. |
| Discount | Reduces the price of an item, or the subtotal of a check. Can be a dollar amount, or a percentage. |
| Diskless | Not containing a hard disk. A Diskless Workstation is a terminal upon which no database files reside, and that is linked to the server of an establishments computer network. It accomplishes transactions by communicating back and forth with the server.NOTE: While a Diskless Workstation must always be a client in a client/server atmosphere, a client in a client/server atmosphere need not always be diskless. |

| Dopplebon Printing | Prints a separate order chit for each item in the current service round. |
| Dot Matrix Printer | A type of printer that prints by hammering the ends of pins against an ink ribbon and, is sometimes referred to as an impact printer. This is the only printer that will print on multiple forms, as with carbons. Also referred to as an “Impact Printer”. |
| Double Window | This is a drive-thru configuration that uses two windows; one for payment and one for pick-up. |
| Download | To transfer data or (especially) code from one computer to another. The distinction between downloading and uploading is hazy but downloading often refers to transfer from a larger "host" system (especially a server or mainframe) to a smaller "client" system, especially a microcomputer or specialized peripheral. A data transfer via digital communications initiated by the receiving machine.Example: You can download a file from a network server to a computer in that network, or from a bulletin board system to a personal computer. Opposite of “Upload”. |
| DT - Cashier | Drive-Thru Cashier. This is the concept of the register at the payment window of a Double Window Drive-Thru. The employee recalls the order, collects the payment, and tenders the order. |
| DT - Order Entry | Drive-Thru Order Entry. This is the concept of the register at the pick-up window of a Double Window Drive-Thru. The employee takes the order then forwards the order to DT-Cashier. After the order has been tendered, the employee at this register recalls the order, checks to see if the order is complete, and delivers it to the customer. |
| Dupe | A copy of the original ordering pad that it placed in the preparation area as a means of requisitioning the items. This term also refers to the remote order requisition produced by the remote printer. |
